SpragWay

The unidirectional bearing for high transmission torque

SpragWay is a high-performance one-way bearing, created by integrating an ingenious system of locking rollers into a four-point contact watch ball bearing.

Thanks to its very high transmittable torque and its almost non-existent dead angle before engagement, it exceeds certain characteristics of the OneWay bearing. For example, the torque transmitted by a 4 mm diameter SpragWay is 10 times higher than that of a OneWay.

Caractéristiques techniques

Guaranteed transmittable torque 10 mNm
Dead angle Almost zero, < 1°
Braking torque in free-running direction < 0.06 mNm
Wobble Almost zero
Corrosion resistance Good
Typical applications

Reverser close to the barrel

Complications requiring high torque and an almost zero dead angle

History of freewheels

In 2006, MPS Watch first introduced the OneWay: a highly compact, miniaturized freewheel clutch system based on four-point contact ball bearing technology.

Over the years, MPS Watch has continuously developed the product to improve its performance. For example, an amagnetic version was introduced in 2021, and the ceramic used exclusively in the balls was the subject of a new patent family in 2023.

With SpragWay, MPS Watch aims to open up new technical possibilities for watch designers. This bearing retains the characteristics that made OneWay successful — corrosion resistance, reliability and performance — while offering remarkable additional qualities.

Applications, validation and testing

The SpragWay bearing can be adapted to customer requirements. However, the maximum transmittable torque depends on the available space. In general, its ability to transmit very high torque makes the SpragWay particularly suitable for applications close to the barrel or for watchmaking complications.

Particular care was taken in the development of this MPS Watch innovation. Based on complex analytical models, the product was optimized through numerous finite element simulations.

SpragWay bearings have undergone thorough MPS Watch tests, including aging tests on test benches equivalent to 5 years of use. The promising results demonstrate the product’s potential.
